Talking about family in Japanese:
A trick in East Asian languages like Japanese is that we refer to insiders and outsiders in different ways.
In the case of families, insiders include our own family members, and outsiders the family members of others.
For example, someone’s own mother should be referred to as “haha”‘, while someone else’s mother is “okaasan”.
