This is what Keiko said about this week’s Japanese class at the Modern Language School in Meltham Mills:
We have learnt how to do shopping in Japanese. Students also had an opportunity to see real Japanese yen notes, and now nobody in the group should have any difficulty if he or she find themselves in a Japanese shopping plaza! 🙂
Our main difficulty so far has been the way in which native speakers of English spell KATAKANA words, which reflect the JAPANESE spelling of FOREIGN words – usually in a way that sounds awkward for the native speaker of the language… A few nice examples are: shi-dee-puree-yaa for… guess what? CD Player! And tere-bi for… TV!
