LES LAPIDIALES

Not even Marie, my sister-in-law, nor Christian, my brother, had ever been there before. It’s not a run of the mill place at all. But if you are, even mildly, interested in seeing “living” sculpture, make sure you go there when you are next in the Poitou-Charentes area! You will not regret it.

An ancient quarry

It’s quite small for a quarry, really. You will need to keep on the look out, so you don’t miss the entrance.

There is also another site nearby, devoted to the history of quarrying which is very interesting and informative about stone quarrying, but not in a boring way. It’s also children friendly and some sculptors are currently working there too.

Les Lapidiales used to be a quarry but has now become a kind of open-air museum for contemporary sculptors from around the world. It’s a very relaxed place, with no entry fee, and you can watch artists chipping away and talk to them.

The scupltures

I loved the mixture of styles and felt (I know nothing much about sculpture) there were lots of influences at play there (medieval, South American, Easter Island, surrealist, etc.) but I’d love to hear / read what you think when you have watched the video.

A festival in the Marais Poitevin

One of the fantastic event Christian and Marie shared with us this summer was the International Art Festival in Magne. This is a village quite close to Niort (15 minutes by car), in the “Green Venice”, the marsh and canals area in the Deux-Sèvres and Vendée.

I took masses of pictures but only selected a few for this video which I hope you will enjoy.

I also hope this will motivate you to enrol on one of our French classes at the Modern Langauge School to make the most of your French holidays.

FRANCE

France has an impeccable reputation as one of Europe’s finest culinary destinations and rightly so. While Bordeaux has traditionally been the country’s wine capital, Dijon is now the place to go for the finest French wines. 3000 independent winemakers call the region home, with ancient vines dating back to 600AD. The vineyards of Dijon offer winery tours ranging from 90 minutes to a whole day, with prices starting at £30. Attend a private tour or go as part of a group, simply make a booking with one of the many local guides.

While you’re in town, pay a visit to Les Halles market. It’s open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6am to 2pm. You’ll find cheese, meat and vintage wine in the impressive market hall designed by Gustave Eiffel. Fill a hamper with delicacies and enjoy a gourmet picnic in the vineyards surrounding the town.

You can easily travel to Dijon from Paris in 91 minutes on the TGV high-speed train service, or take the Train Express Régional. At 2hr 50min, it’s a longer journey but costs less than €50.
