We took a leap of faith in 2012 with renting at Meltham Mills, but we’ve had 6 wonderful years here. Also, we have been very proud to offer a space dedicated to language learning to over 300 students in the region.

However, as the numbers of our students is growing and we have introduced another 3 languages, our original 3 rooms has seriously been restricting our scope. We even lost potential Japanese students because we simply had no room available at 7pm. Some of our classes are quite “cosy” in the smallest room.

Finally, after an extensive search, we have found the new premises we were looking for: Unit 7, at Queen’s Square Business Park, Honley, will house 5 classrooms, a kitchenette and a breakout area. Without stairs!

At present, the unit is a vast space with 2 toilet and shower cubicles. Extensive work is starting this week to be ready by the September term and will include:

• partition walls creating 5 classrooms
• suspended ceilings for better acoustics and heat retention
• overhauling the electric circuits and lighting
• bringing in a gas supply
• installing a central heating system
• installing ventilation
• fitting new flooring throughout
• fitting a kitchenette and creating a breakout area.

Our team really believe in the school and love our work with our fantastic students.

We are convinced the new premises will transform the Modern Language School from a great place to learn to the great place to learn in the region.

We will keep you posted with progress reports of the renovations and look forward to welcoming you all to the new school in September.

• Saturday the 10th of March, 11 am to 12.30, French conversation (£10)
• Monday the 16th of April, 7 to 8.30 pm, French for holidays, an 8 week course for beginners (£88)
• Friday the 20th of April, 7 to 9:15 pm, French wine tasting (£18)
• Saturday the 28th of April, 11 am to 12.30, French conversation (£10)
• Saturday the 19th of May, 11 am to 12.30, French conversation (£10)
• Saturday the 9th of June, 11 am to 12.30, French conversation (£10)

All the above take place at the Modern Language School, Unit G2, Meltham Mills Industrial Estate, Meltham, Holmfirth, HD9 4DS.

• The French conversation classes:

  Ideal for people at intermediate plus or advanced levels. These don’t involve, as is so sadly often the case in “French conversation classes”, reading an article from a newspaper or magazine and then trying to think about what to say about it. The conversations are based on everyday life themes and involve a lot of talking as well as speaking games. I (Dom) teach these classes and have never resented tearing myself away for an hour and a half from my chilled (or not) weekend.

• The French for holidays course:

  This is designed for total beginners who wish to have some contact with French people, who no longer want to order snails when they are vegetarian, and who want to find their way round their holiday resort. Once again, we concentrate on everyday life (albeit life on holiday) and on speaking and understanding. The course comes with a free detailed booklet containing lessons, exercises and activities. My colleague Gwen, who comes from Lille, will guide you through this course and might even be able to recommend some cool places to visit in her wonderful city.

• The French wine tasting:

  The French wine tasting evenings are always popular and I hope this one will continue the tradition. We only taste, and sometimes taste again, French wines. I usually introduce each wine with a very short video (in French or in English). Tasting notes are provided in English as well as a score sheet for you to keep for future reference. My long-suffering partner will prepare snacks to go with the wines and my (also long-suffering) colleague Nina will help me with the presentation and serving of the wine. I usually recommend that you drive to the school in Meltham Mills and share a taxi back home. I can then provide you with a narrow window (11 to 11.15 am) to pick up your car the following morning.

Not even Marie, my sister-in-law, nor Christian, my brother, had ever been there before. It’s not a run of the mill place at all. But if you are, even mildly, interested in seeing “living” sculpture, make sure you go there when you are next in the Poitou-Charentes area! You will not regret it.

An ancient quarry

It’s quite small for a quarry, really. You will need to keep on the look out, so you don’t miss the entrance.

There is also another site nearby, devoted to the history of quarrying which is very interesting and informative about stone quarrying, but not in a boring way. It’s also children friendly and some sculptors are currently working there too.

Les Lapidiales used to be a quarry but has now become a kind of open-air museum for contemporary sculptors from around the world. It’s a very relaxed place, with no entry fee, and you can watch artists chipping away and talk to them.

The scupltures

I loved the mixture of styles and felt (I know nothing much about sculpture) there were lots of influences at play there (medieval, South American, Easter Island, surrealist, etc.) but I’d love to hear / read what you think when you have watched the video.
