As throughout the day the standard of Italian was excellent. Bravi studenti! We then moved on to a video comprehension about the new discoveries of Pompei by the famous historian Alberto Angela. (Well worth a watch if you like history see link below) Then it was time for our guest Italian speaker Orlando. Really putting our students listening skills to the test Orlando talked to us about his life, where he was born (in France not Italy) and how he got to where he is today "Uddersfield" It was then time for lunch which was delicious as always and provided by the wonder Kay from Salute Grazing Tables (see menu below). And then came the magic! Yes literally. Not only is Orlando interesting and fun he is also a Magician part of the Huddersfield Magic Circle. He amazed us with some tricks, all in Italian of course. (Videos below). After lunch and magic, we continued with activities. Next up the students were divided into two groups and given a murder mystery play to read, understand and perform! This is where the students really outdid themselves! Amazing Italian and we also got some great acting too! Whilst they were all brilliant the performance of the day goes to Hannah! (I think you missed your calling there!). This left two more activities; a listening on Il ciclismo italiano which was aided by our highly knowledgeable student David a keen cyclist with a passion for Il Ciclismo! We ended the day with a 5 round quiz in Italian topics included; food, history, geography and general knowledge.

I will leave you with some videos and a photo of our scrabble board that the students added to throughout the day. All that remains for me to say is that those of you who attended were really amazing and you should all be very proud of what you achieved. Oh, and not everyone who attended had high level Italian we had one gentleman who only joined us in January. So open to everyone if you want to give it a go.
We will be offering more of these full day courses and hopefully in French and in German too.

My students often tell me that it is the small linking words that they find difficult to remember. So here are a few of them with some examples to help you. This article was written by thoughtco.com, more articles like this can be found at: https://www.thoughtco.com/search?q=italian

1.) E – And

Mi piace andare in spiaggia e leggere. – I like to go to the beach and read.

Vorrei andare quest’estate in Toscana e in Puglia. – I would like to go to Tuscany and Puglia this summer.

Mi serve un po’ di zucchero, del pane e della frutta. – I need a bit of sugar, some bread, and some fruit.

Vuoi guardare un film e poi prendere un caffè? – Do you want to watch a movie and then grab a coffee?

2.) Però/ma – But

Vorrei venire in centro con voi, ma oggi ho troppe cose da fare. – I want to go downtown with you all, but I have too many things to do today.

Mi piace andare in spiaggia, però non mi piace prendere il sole. – I like to go the beach, but I don’t like to suntan.

Volevo venire a trovarti, ma ho perso il treno! – I wanted to come and visit you, but I missed the train.

Ho provato a leggere questo libro, però è troppo noioso. – I tried to read this book, but it’s too boring.

3.) O/Oppure – Or

Preferisci mangiare il pesce o la carne? – Do you prefer to eat fish or meat?

Ti piace leggere romanzi oppure gialli? – Do you like to read romance novels or mystery novels?

Vuoi andare a Roma o a Tivoli? – Do you want to go to Rome or Tivoli?

4.) Anche – Also

Mi piace anche leggere. – I also like to read.

Note that the placement of “anche” can only be before the verb “leggere”.

Ho comprato anche un libro di grammatica. – I also bought a grammar book.

Here you could place “anche” between “ho” and “comprato”, and its placement serves to highlight different parts of the sentence.

Vorrei anche un contorno. – I would also like a side.

Anche io. – Me too.

5.) Che – That

Preferisco che andiamo al mare invece che in piscina. – I prefer that we go to the sea instead of the pool.

Non pensi che faccia troppo caldo? – You don’t think it’s too hot?

Silvia è un’insegnante che si aspetta molto dagli studenti. – Silvia is a teacher that expects a lot from her students.

6.) Quindi – So/Then

Oggi ho molto da fare, quindi non posso uscire con voi. – Today I have a lot to do, so I can’t go out with you all.

Non mi piace la neve, quindi mi trasferisco alle Hawaii. – I don’t like the snow, so I’m moving to Hawaii.

Amo la cultura italiana, quindi imparo l’italiano. – I love Italian culture, so I’m learning Italian.

7.) Allora – So, Then, Well

Allora, ti racconto cos’è successo. – So let me tell you what happened.

Ci vediamo allora! – We’ll see each other then!

Allora, che facciamo? – Well, what are we doing?

8.) Cioè – That is

Faccio la scrittrice, cioè scrivo articoli su come s’imparano le lingue straniere. – I’m a writer, that is I write about how to learn foreign languages.

La mia auto appartiene alla classe Euro 6, cioè quella delle auto meno inquinanti. – My car belongs to the Euro 6 class, that’s the one more environment friendly.

Vado in Italia fra due mesi, cioè a giugno. – I’m going to Italy in two months, in June actually.

I hope you found this useful, if you would like to learn more Italian then why not join one of our courses at www.modernlanguageschool.co.uk

It’s been another great weeks at The Modern Language School. Lots of hard work by our students as always as well as lots of fun and laughter! In our Italian classes we have been focusing on the importance of vocabulary (play the vocab ball game) and improving our listening skills. This has got me thinking… There is no doubt that Italian speak quickly and for someone learning the language it can be very difficult to understand. So much so listening exercises tend to be the least favourite classroom activity. Here are a few thoughts as to how to improve your listening (and speaking) skills.

Watch as much Italian TV or videos as you can.

Currently on UK TV there are two Italian TV series Gomorrah Sky Atlantic Tuesday 11:30pm – also available on catch up and The Mafia Detective – Maltese available to download on All 4. If neither of these are to your taste then why not try RaiPlay the Italian version of IPlayer http://www.raiplay.it/ it asks you to register but it is free. Another great website is https://www.almaedizioni.it/it/almatv/ this is an Italian language learning website and is full of videos, usually with Italian subtitles however they are sorted by level so you should be able to find something to suitable. In class last week I used a video showing the “mozzafiato” Firenze https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwK4eRwzw9Y&t=10s there are a number of videos in this series about different Italian cities.

Learn the pleasures of Italian Cinema.

If you have never watched an Italian film before then I would highly recommend you start with the famous award winning film Cinema Paradiso available in our small lending library at The Modern Language School or if you want to buy your own copy then it is available on Amazon for just £4.99. Other great films include: La meglio gioventù (my all-time favourite film!), La Vita è Bella, Piccolo Diavolo, Pane e Tupliani, Un viaggio in Italia – Una favola vera, Benvenuti al Sud, Mine Vaganti, La Mafia Uccide Solo D’estate, Il Postino and I could go on and on and on… Remember not only will you be improving your listening skills you will be widening you vocabulary and improving your Italian pronunciation simply by sitting there and enjoying a good film. A few years ago I had a student who was a true “cinefilo” “film buff” he would often watch a film in Italian with English subtitles, then watch it again with Italian subtitles and sometimes even a third time with no subtitles at all! His Italian improved in leaps and bounds over a very short space of time!

Listen to music.

Ok so you might not be an opera buff, although listening to opera is very good for your Italian, but there is a lot more to Italian music than opera. Try searching for Italian music on you tube as often you get the lyrics on the video at the same time as the song. Following the lyrics and listening to the song is a great way to improve your Italian!

Listen to Audiobooks.

If you like reading then this is a great way to practice your listening skills whilst enjoying a good story. I would recommend Imparare leggendo series of books which come with a CD, some of these are available to borrow from our lending library. Also check out this website https://onlineitalianclub.com/ as they sell easy readers to download and they have links to the audio file.

Try and Italian Podcast.

The great thing about Podcasts is that you can download them to your Ipod and listen to them whilst you are doing something else, cooking, ironing, walking the dog or even while you are in your car. I would recommend http://www.podclub.ch/it/transmissioni/al-dente-i

Widen your vocabulary.

One of the main reasons students find listening to Italian difficult is their lack of vocabulary. Everything that I have mentioned above is great for increasing your Italian vocabulary. You could also try reading as much Italian as you can. Find something that interests you, Italian history, I gialli (crime novels), Italian recipes anything really and read it. Remember though try to make it relaxed and enjoyable as opposed to hard work, it is not always necessary to understand every word or to sit there with a dictionary (boring!).

Go to places where people speak Italian.

OK, yes we would all love to jet off on the next plane to Italy however sadly this is not always possible L there are other places to go. For my students attending your weekly classes is a great start. If you are reading this and you haven’t signed up for a class then check out the rest of this website. As well as an Italian class, at The Modern Language School, try going to your local Italian restaurant. They are often run by Italians and they are more than happy for you to practice your Italian with them.

Well I think that’s about it. I will end by saying remember whatever you choose to do make sure it is FUN! Buon divertimento!

READ, books, articles, blogs, everything which will help you widen your Italian I would however recommend you chose something which interests you and something slightly above your level! Reading for 10/15 minutes a day will be enough to noticeably improve your ability.

LISTEN, films, songs, everything you can and every time you can listen. This is crucial to improving your Italian and there is a wide variety of things to choose from. Not only will you improve your vocabulary you will start to get an ear for the language and improve you spoken Italian without even opening your mouth!

Every opportunity you have TALK Italian! Above all in class as your teacher and your fellow students will be there to help you. Try to make sure you talk at your level of Italian. Try to avoid translating complicated sentences from English to Italian. Unprepared speech at whatever level is the best!

Study GRAMMAR! Yes I am sorry if you are not a massive fan. Whilst it is not the most important part of your studies it is fundamental. Grammar gives you the tools to understand and speak the language correctly.

TAKE NOTES. Carry with you a small note book and jot down new words and phrases as you hear them. Then try to use them repeatedly until they roll off the tongue.

Set ACHIEVEABLE TARGETS. Setting short term goals is which you can achieve will be motivating and encourage your studies.

IMMERSE yourself in the language. Surround yourself with people that speak Italian. Whether this is in class, by attending extra activities or ideally booking that all important trip to Italy.

HAVE FUN! I believe that in order to do something really well you need to enjoy doing it! It is my job to make sure you enjoy your lessons after that it is up to you!

My last piece of advice is HAVE A GO! Don’t worry about making mistakes! The more you try the more you will learn!

I adore foreign languages. It always baffles me when people say, “Ah but they all speak English over there.” Sure, you can make yourself ‘understood’ in most countries these days. But speaking the local tongue is the only way to truly understand the heart and mentality of a culture. Your relationships will be richer. You’re less likely to be ripped off. You’re more likely to fall in love. You’re certain to earn their respect. I still make so many mistakes but here are some of the errors I hear often or used to make myself when I first arrived in Italy.

That makes sense, or does it?

I’ve often heard irate foreigners shouting at an Italian ‘non fa senso’! I can tell they’re directly translating in their head from the English ‘it doesn’t make sense’. It’s worth looking up ubiquitous phrases like this because they don’t always use the same verb as us. In Italian they say literally ‘it doesn’t have sense’ – ‘non ha senso’. And if you’ve spent any time as an expat in Italy then you know you’ll be needing this phrase a lot!

The context in which Italians use ‘make’ when we would not is when talking about offers or invites and how much trouble something ‘makes’ or doesn’t make for them. It doesn’t come naturally to an English speaker, but the usual response when being asked how you feel about doing something is that ‘ti fa piacere’ (it brings you pleasure to do it) or literally ‘it makes pleasure to me’. So when you’re completely lost with a dripping gelato in your hand and you stop a kind stranger to ask for directions and drip gelato over his suede loafers, he might say ‘non fa niente’ (literally ‘it makes nothing’ but meaning ‘no big deal’) followed by ‘mi fa piacere aiutarti’ (literally ‘it makes pleasure for me helping you’ but meaning ‘I’m happy to help you’).

But enough about you, let’s talk about me

The word ‘piacere’ needs to be understood in order to be polite, give compliments or handle the complicated business of falling in love in Italian. It’s fundamental. It is so foreign to us because we think, perhaps egocentrically, that WE are the subject of every conversation. I like that. I miss you. I would like to go there. I, I, I! How many lovelorn tourists have texted their Italian holiday flings with ‘io ti manco’, which seems like ‘I miss you’, but is actually the opposite – you miss me. No wonder they think Anglo-saxons are forward. 😉

I suggest always thinking that the emotion is happening TO you. For example, ‘I like you’ is ‘mi piaci’, or as I think of it, ‘you are pleasing to me’. Similarly, ‘I miss you’ is ‘mi manchi’, or ‘you are missing to me’. Personally this sums up my reaction to most things in Italy. I often feel like they happen ‘to me’, like a wave curling up crashing down over me, soaking me completely and leaving me standing on the shore with no control over my emotions.

Wipe that smile off your face! You’re not happy, you’re content

What a whimsical word ‘felice’ is. It sounds like pastel-coloured confetti might burst out of your mouth as you say it. We throw around the word ‘happy’ with such frequency in English and that is indeed the definition of ‘felice’ in Italian, however, in all my time living in Italy I’ve got to say I don’t hear ‘felice’ used as often as ‘sto bene’ or ‘sono contento’ (male) or ‘sono contenta’ (female). When you’re so euphoric to be in this beautiful country and emotion smacks you in the face at every turn, you’re going to feel that a response that sounds like it borders on ho-hum complacency or some buddhist ‘I am content sitting on a rock’ statement is hardly adequate to describe your level of joy. But it is. That’s not to say Italians don’t use ‘felice’ but in my experience I’ve certainly heard them use ‘stare bene’ and ‘essere contento’ more and upgrade it to ‘sto benissimo’ or ‘sono contentissimo’ for times of elevated happiness.

How does it go? It goes.

If you’re being invited out you might hear the casual question of ‘ti va?’ This comes from the verb ‘andare’ (to go) and it’s a great way to ask someone out while still being super cool and nonchalant. Don’t go all phrasebook on them with ‘vuoi venire con me alla spiaggia’ (do you want to come with me to the beach) when you could say the more colloquial ‘are you up for going to the beach’, which is ‘ti va di andare al mare?’ Oh, that’s another one. No one calls it the ‘beach’ here. You go to the ‘sea’.

You’re rude and too polite at the same time

I used to feel that I had to only use the conditional when ordering in Italy. Could you bring me… Could I have… Actually, the more I listen to Italians, the more I realise that they often use the present tense, which literally translates as ‘You bring me the menu. You make me a coffee.’ ‘Scusa, mi porti il menu’? Scusi, mi fa un caffe’?’ To my ears this used to sound so impolite. However, depending on the tone or if you use the Lei or the formal Italian and be sure to add a little ‘per favore’ at the end, it’s not rude at all.

Oh and while we’re on the subject of ‘per favore’… so many friends come to visit me and when buying things from locals or in a restaurant they start busting out ‘gracias’ and ‘por favor’. Expats don’t tend to go all Spanish but it’s something I hear from tourists all the time. When you’re pronouncing the Italian ‘per’, don’t let it become like a pussycat’s ‘purr’; it’s more like the way we pronounce the fruit ‘pear’ with a nice Latin rolling of the ‘r’ at the end. So when you’re being polite, think fruit not pussycat. 😉 As for ‘grazie’, the ‘ie’ at the end is almost imperceptible – focus on the ‘gra’. It should come out like two syllables, whereas foreigners tend to turn it into three: gra-zi-e. It should sound more like ‘graaaaaaaaah-tsyeh’.

Of course, Italians will forgive your errors and you need to make mistakes in order to test out your new phrases and gain confidence with the pronunciation. But it does help to stop and listen every now and then. I’ve come across expats who have been living in Italy for 20 years and are still making these mistakes because they just translate straight from English rather than pausing to absorb just how locals string together this bellissima lingua.
