I am so pleased to have found a French beginners course locally after wanting to do it for some time. Even more delighted to find one with well organised, well equipped classrooms.Most importantly, Melodie our teacher makes the lesson so enjoyable. She is knowledgeable, organised and friendly, she is able to keep us comfortable speaking whilst challenging us. So looking forward to the next session. Duolingo has been relegated!I recommend.

Learning Italian with Vicky has been a joy. The lessons are great fun, very varied and take place in a really supportive and relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, Vicky lays on Italian film showings and optional holiday lessons; she also organises great events – such as quizzes and social evenings. The Modern Language School really is a fine place to learn a language – and the coffee is great too!(And if, for any reason, you can’t get to the class, you can join it on Zoom and participate fully.)

Absolutely amazing experience. I am in Spanish Intermediate and all the lessons are planned to perfection, totally enjoyable and fun to take part in. Lynne is an amazing teacher as she is enthusiastic, supportive, encouraging and very professional. We cover all the skills in every lesson including speaking and listening. I have been a student at the MLS for a number of years trying my hand at Spanish, Portuguese, Advanced French conversation and more recently, Italian with Vicky.All the teachers are highly qualified, friendly and professional, using a range of successful teaching techniques which can be accessed in the school or via Zoom.Groups are small, friendly and fun. The school itself boasts comfortable classrooms and facilities.The course fees are excellent value.

Fantastic school for learning languages. I began to learn Italian in September 2022. Our teacher is fab as is the class. I have been studying Italian at the Modern Language School for a year now. Vicky has made it a great class to be part of. From knowing no Italian at the start of the school year, I really have progressed with Vicky through books, videos, interactive work within the class and speaking. It’s a really fun class so you aren’t scared of making mistakes in front of anyone. It’s a half hour drive for me to get here on an evening but it’s always worth it. Getting ready to sign up for year 2. Would definitely recommend the school, whichever language you are hoping to learn.

I enrolled on the Italian course in September, and have really enjoyed the lessons. I had a basic knowledge of the language, but I’ve now built this to a higher level. Vicky makes the lessons fun and engaging, and you cover a huge range of topics. The school has a relaxed atmosphere and it’s a great place to meet new people.

Learning a second language had been on my ‘to do list’ for a while. The Modern Language school has a great range of languages and levels. Beginners Spanish met all my expectations with a comfortable pace of learning. The option to join on line via zoom has been a bonus with Covid and it’s many challenges.I am very much looking forward to starting the third year with many of the people who signed up in year one. On a practical level the school has great facilities regarding refreshments, snacks etc which is sometimes needed!

The Modern language school offers a friendly organised and effective learning experience.My experience learning Spanish has always been very positive. Many different resources are used and there are always plenty of opportunities to engage in spanish conversation. A fabulous environment to learn a new language. I studied Italian for 5 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. Vicky uses a great variety of learning tools and makes the lessons fun whilst at the same time ensuring we’re all keeping up. Having many other demands on my time I never felt under pressure to study outside the classroom although for those who choose to, Vicky is also very supportive.The school runs foreign cinema sessions, additional study sessions during holidays and great social events giving the opportunity to also meet students from other classes.In summary, a great place to learn a new language at a pace to suit you.

I thoroughly enjoy my Spanish classes at the Modern Language School. Lynne offers a mix of teaching styles which make the classes interesting and informative and most importantly of all fun!! The school itself is well equipped for both classes on site and also via zoom. There is plenty of parking and facilities for refreshment breaks. All in all a fantastic place to learn languages.

This is an excellent place to learn a language. You can learn French, Spanish an italien. The teacher are excellent. Classes can be taken in the evening or during the day.

I have been learning Italian for the past few years from no knowledge at all other than a few ski holidays in Italy. I have thoroughly enjoyed my group lessons with Vicky. She makes the learning fun, with games and videos and, yes, some essential grammar too. In addition we have had cinema mornings, an Italian food demo, videos and extra classes during the holidays for mixed groups. Whilst in lockdown all our classes have been online. Now we are back at the school in Honley. This has several classrooms or varying sizes to accommodate all types of class. The school is very well organised in all aspects, with a lot of thought going into the safety of us all whilst we are in this pandemic.

Excellent school in which to begin learning a new language or to improve existing language skills. The environment is professional but at the same is relaxed, friendly and welcoming. Teaching staff are very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and approachable. A range of learning strategies are used in classes which makes the sessions varied and very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

“A lesson starts in 20 minutes – sit in and listen, or join in if you like, then decide”. This was the reply to my enquiry about taking up Italian again after several years and wondering what level to try next. Two years later and I’m still here enjoying learning both in lessons and by following up various WhatsApp messages, suggested YouTube links, etc.During lessons, we’re made to feel completely at ease, even when being gently corrected (again) for our mistakes. In response to Covid, the classrooms have been upgraded considerably to keep us safe, and when on-site lessons were forbidden, we still had fun keeping going on Zoom.For anyone considering starting or continuing to learn one of the languages on offer, here is a brilliant choice.

I was recommended this school 5 years ago by a friend who took the Spanish classes and I joined the Italian classes with Vicky. The Modern Language School isn’t just a school to learn to speak a language – it is a school to learn to love the language, the people, the food and wine, the culture and history of a beautiful country. We do learn words, we learn phrases, we conjugate verbs, we have to learn a lot of grammar, but we have so much fun doing it, and it is interspersed with films, games, reading and a lot of laughter. In addition to the weekly lessons, there are Italian cinema mornings, Italian cooking classes, wine tasting and conversation groups. The school have accommodated on line lessons during this past 18 months and the staff work very hard to keep everyone happy and interested with extra lessons during the summer for those who wish to keep it fresh or just need to catch up. This is the school to go to if you want to experience a language, not just speak it.

I had been looking for an Italian class closer to home, but found this and don’t regret it. The classes are small and very friendly. The school has coped admirably with Covid, moving to zoom but now back in the classroom. Teaching includes a mix of conversation, games, quizzes and other resources.

The school is fantastic. Teaching is of a very high standard and it is the perfect place to learn a new language or improve a foreign language, which you already speak. Learning Italian in Vicky’s classes feels more like fun, than an effort. I really enjoy my little escape for two hours every week in the Modern language school.

Our French Classes

Here at the Modern Language School, Honley, Huddersfield, we offer French courses for all levels both during the day and in the evening. Our French classes are structured in such a way that they allow the students to thoroughly enjoy their learning experience.

The courses are taught either by Nina Roberts, an enthusiastic, experienced and qualified language teacher or Roxane Fish (native French speaker) with 13 years of teaching experience and a passion for France and all things French.

Meet The Teachers

Nina Roberts

Salut, my name is Nina, originally from Southwest Germany, not too far from the French border, where I grew up. I have a degree in Education with Psychology and English from the Technical University in Darmstadt. I have been in the UK for over 15 years and have always taught French alongside German because I simply love the French language.

When I arrived in the UK in 2006 I first worked as a German FLA (Foreign Language Assistant) in two schools in Doncaster and subsequently qualified to teach in secondary schools in 2008. I now work as a self-employed languages tutor to enable me to spend more time with my family. I joined the Modern Language School in autumn 2013 and really enjoy teaching and learning here.

As well as spending time with my family I enjoy reading, music and hiking. I am also learning Italian with Vicky. This is great fun and a useful reminder of what it is like to sit on the other side of the classroom in the student’s role.

Roxane Fish

Bonjour, my name is Roxane Fish. I am half French half English. I was born in Africa and went to school in a few of the countries there. I am originally from the south of France (Aix-en-Provence) where I also went to school. I have been living in England for 25 years now.

I have a degree in International Hospitality Management. I started tutoring French as a native speaker 13 years ago and I have taught a wide range of different age groups. I took some time off whilst my children were little and have started teaching again.

I love travelling with my family, going back to France to visit family and friend, and experiencing different cultures.

My French classes are fun and interactive as well as being of the highest standard focusing on the individual learning needs of my students. Why not come and find out for yourself.

Melodie Golton

Salut! My name is Melodie Golton and I teach French at the Modern Language School.

I enjoy teaching French, having studied both French and German at university (Bachelors 2:1) and am passionate about sharing my love of languages and knowledge of Francophone culture. I have a particular interest in French cinema and naturally, French food and drink!

I’ve been fortunate enough to live and work in France as an English teacher in Strasbourg and Brive-la-Gaillarde as well as spending time at my Grandparents in the French Alps.

I understand how daunting language learning can be, having written a Master’s thesis on speaking anxiety when speaking French, and so endeavour to make classes as fun, accessible and interesting as possible so you can feel at ease and ready to learn. I’ve taught students between the ages of 4 and 80 of a variety of different nationalities and would love to welcome you to my class and help you discover the joys of the French language, Francophone culture and of being able to connect with the many French speakers around the world!

Our Terms & Conditions

The school will not be held responsible for any loss or damage of property. The student must be responsible for their own property.
Fees must be paid in full to secure a booking. Places are offered on a first-come first-serve basis. No student will be permitted to start a course until fees have been paid in full.
Courses can only be cancelled by sending written notice to The Modern Language School. If this notice is received 14 days or more before the course is due to start, a refund of all monies paid will be made. If a student chooses to leave their course early for any reason (or cancel within 14 days of the course start date) then no refund will be made.
The Modern Language School reserves the right to modify a course if numbers are insufficient.
If The Modern Language School is obliged to cancel a course, The Modern Language School will notify students immediately, and offer an alternative course or a refund of all monies paid.
The Modern Language School shall not be liable for any loss, damage, injury, expense, delay or inconvenience suffered or incurred as a result of any circumstance outside the control of The Modern Language School. This includes lessons cancelled as a result of adverse weather conditions, or any other circumstances out of our control.
The Modern Language School liability in respect of any claims made shall not exceed the amount paid for tuition fees.

This agreement shall be governed by English Law and the parties hereto irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts in respect of any dispute or matter arising out of this agreement.
