Beginners’ German Classes in Huddersfield
Start German from the very beginning, with practical lessons, an experienced teacher and other adults learning alongside you.
German looks daunting until you start using it
German has a reputation for long words and complicated rules. That can make people hesitate before taking their first class. But you do not begin by unravelling a paragraph of German. You begin with greetings, familiar sounds, short exchanges and a growing sense of how the language works.
Our beginners’ German classes are for adults with little or no previous German. The Modern Language School is in Honley, near Huddersfield, and offers the chance to learn in a friendly group rather than working through material entirely on your own.
Perhaps you travel to Germany or Austria, work with German-speaking colleagues, or are simply interested in a language that is a bit different. You do not need a grand reason to start.
Making sense of the language, bit by bit
One of the pleasant surprises about German is that its pronunciation often follows patterns you can learn. Once you know what particular letters tend to sound like, reading unfamiliar words becomes less of a guessing game.
You will also meet articles, everyday verbs and the shape of simple sentences. It is tempting to worry about getting every ending right, but a first course is about laying the groundwork: hearing German, saying useful things and understanding what people mean in familiar situations.
The goal is to replace “I would never be able to learn that” with something much more practical: “I recognise those words, and I know how to reply.”

The early stages involve listening and speaking as well as working with words and sentence patterns.
Do I need to have learnt a language at school?
Not at all. You can start German without previous language study.
