A language that opens up a different world

If you have ever stood in a Greek village trying to read a sign, you will know that Greek feels different from many of the languages we meet at school. The alphabet alone can make it seem like a big undertaking. But learning Greek begins with manageable steps, just like any other language.

Our beginners’ Greek classes in Honley are for adults who want to start at the beginning. Some people come because they love spending time in Greece; others have family connections or simply enjoy discovering a language with such a distinctive sound and writing system.

You do not need to arrive knowing the Greek alphabet. Becoming familiar with it is part of the adventure.

Reading the letters is only the start

Recognising a few Greek letters can be enormously satisfying. Suddenly a place name that looked like a puzzle begins to make sense. It is useful, but it is only one part of the language. You also want to be able to greet someone, ask a question and understand a simple answer.

Early Greek learning combines sound, vocabulary and short exchanges. You will gradually notice how words change, how to make polite requests and how the language works in everyday situations.

For many learners, having a teacher explain something face to face is much easier than trying to decode it from an app, especially when the alphabet and pronunciation are both new.
