Beginners’ Spanish Classes in Huddersfield
Fancy learning Spanish but never quite got round to it? Our adult beginner classes in Honley give you somewhere to start, with other people who are learning too.
Your first Spanish lesson starts here
Perhaps you have a holiday booked, family in Spain, or simply want to do something different one evening a week. Whatever has brought you here, you do not need to know a single Spanish word before you start. Our beginners’ Spanish classes are designed for adults taking their first steps with the language.
We teach at the Modern Language School in Honley, just outside Huddersfield. There is no expectation that you will walk in speaking confidently. You will hear new words, try them out, forget a few, and gradually find that you can put together sentences of your own. That is what a beginner class is for.
If you already remember a little Spanish from school or previous lessons, you can compare levels on our main Spanish classes page before deciding where to begin.
From “hola” to a proper conversation
Spanish becomes useful surprisingly quickly. At first, it might be introducing yourself or saying where you live. Before long, the things you learn can help you order lunch, understand a simple question or ask somebody to repeat what they have said.
We concentrate on everyday language rather than expecting beginners to memorise endless lists. You will become familiar with pronunciation, build a useful stock of words and start making sense of simple grammatical patterns. There is room to ask questions and have a go at speaking without feeling you have to get everything right first time.
It is particularly satisfying when you recognise a phrase in a café, at an airport or in a Spanish television programme. Those small moments are a good reason to keep going.
Start using Spanish in real situations
Small, useful exchanges are a better place to begin than trying to memorise everything at once.
Start speaking
Practise greetings, introductions and the short exchanges you might use when meeting somebody for the first time.
Make yourself understood
Work with numbers, dates, simple questions and polite requests, including useful words for cafés and restaurants.
Get your bearings
Begin putting Spanish sentences together so asking for directions or talking about your plans feels less daunting.

Questions about starting Spanish
Here are a few things people often ask before joining a beginner group.
Do I have to know any Spanish before joining?
No. A complete beginners’ class is intended for people with little or no previous knowledge. If you studied Spanish before, ask us whether the beginner or elementary level would suit you better.
Is Spanish easier if I have learnt another language?
Some words and patterns may feel familiar if you have studied French or Italian, but previous language experience is not required.
Will I be speaking Spanish in the first few lessons?
You can expect to practise saying simple words and expressions from early on. Nobody expects polished conversations from a complete beginner.
Can I attend in the evening?
The published 2026/27 timetable includes a Wednesday evening beginner session. Check the main Spanish page for the latest timetable before enrolling.
