Every language learner starts somewhere

The hardest part of learning a language can be deciding to begin. You might be wondering whether you are too old, whether you will remember anything, or whether everybody else will already know more than you. Our beginner classes are designed with those questions in mind.

The Modern Language School has been teaching adults since 2011. Our purpose-built classrooms are in Honley, near Huddersfield, and we teach six languages: Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese and Greek. You do not need a perfect accent or a great school report to get started.

What helps is being in a group where you can hear the language, ask what something means and practise without needing to pretend you have understood everything straight away. Learning should fit into your life, not feel like another examination.

Choose Your Beginner Language

Not sure which language to learn?

Different languages catch people’s imaginations for different reasons. Some are preparing for holidays; others want to talk to family, make a change to their weekly routine or take up a new challenge. Choose the language you are interested in to find out what the earliest lessons involve.

One important distinction: MLS currently advertises beginners’ Portuguese as an online option. The other five languages have beginner classes listed at the Honley school in the published 2026/27 timetable. Always check the current timetable before enrolling.

Why learn with other beginners?

An experienced teacher can explain a tricky sound or answer the question an app cannot.
You get to practise speaking and listening with people who are learning at the same level.
A regular class gives you time away from the usual routine and the chance to meet others.

From interested to enrolled

It is a simple process. You do not need to study beforehand or buy books just to enquire.

Choose your language

Pick the language that interests you, whether that is for holidays, family or a new challenge.
