Start Portuguese from home

Portuguese might be the language of a favourite holiday destination, a friend or partner’s family, or simply somewhere you want to explore more confidently. Whatever the reason, knowing a few words makes a difference when you meet people and try to join in.

MLS is a language school based in Honley, near Huddersfield, and its advertised beginner Portuguese option is online. That means you can get started without travelling to our classrooms. There are other Portuguese levels too, including an in-person intermediate-plus class listed on the main course page.

If you are comparing formats, visit the Portuguese classes page to see what is being taught and how classes are arranged.

Getting used to the sound of Portuguese

At first glance, Portuguese can look a little like Spanish. Hearing it spoken is another matter: some vowels, rhythms and everyday expressions are quite different. That is one reason listening practice matters from the start.

You might begin with introductions, numbers and polite requests before moving into simple exchanges about family, travel or day-to-day activities. Rather than trying to learn every verb ending at once, you build an understanding of patterns as you need them.

If you already know some Spanish, familiar-looking words may help. But Portuguese deserves to be learnt on its own terms, especially if you want to feel confident understanding somebody’s reply.
