Put your German knowledge to work

At some point in learning German, the challenge changes. You know how to make sentences, recognise plenty of vocabulary and follow familiar topics. What you want now is to respond more easily, understand the details and use the language without having to plan every word.

The Modern Language School in Honley, near Huddersfield, offers an Advanced German group taught by Nina Roberts, a native German speaker with many years of teaching experience. The idea is to build on the language you’ve already studied, rather than take you back through the basics.

Whether your interest comes from work, travel, family or simply enjoying German, regular classes can give that knowledge a useful place in your week.

Go beyond familiar German sentences

Longer conversations bring different demands, from understanding the details to finding a more exact way of saying something.

Speak about wider subjects

Work towards discussing experiences, opinions and ideas without relying solely on simple everyday phrases.

Become more flexible with structure

Build confidence using the language patterns you've studied when sentences get longer or more detailed.

Keep listening closely

Practise following German when the topic changes, the meaning is subtle or the speaker uses less familiar vocabulary.

German you can keep using

Language skills stay more useful when you have somewhere to exercise them. Reading a news story, catching up with someone in Germany or Austria, or trying to express a complicated thought can remind you how much there is still to learn.

Higher-level German is also rewarding because you begin to appreciate nuances that passed you by in the early stages. Nina’s teaching draws on both her native knowledge of German and her extensive experience supporting people at different levels.
